Butler Middle School
7530 S. 2700 E. Cottonwood Heights
Groundbreaking: Sept. 8, 2011
Opening Celebration: Aug. 14, 2013
With passage of a $250 million bond in 2010, Canyons District wasted no time tackling an ambitious building schedule, starting with, among other projects, a complete rebuild of Butler Middle School, which was originally constructed in 1965. For efficiency, students continued to attend their old school as the new building was raised on another corner of the property. The dim hallways and aging foundation of the old school were replaced with a seismically-safe and state-of-the-art building with: an expanded cafeteria, kitchen and commons area; gymnasium with two full courts,12 basketball hoops, and an elevated indoor running track; and a fully integrated computer suite and media center with a green screen TV production studio. The school, which has a capacity of 1,300 students, is full of natural light; even the gym has views of the magnificent nearby mountains. A soccer field was installed just east of the school. The energy-efficient building has reduced previous utility energy costs by 14 percent.
